As A Perfect Storm develops, CUDDY worries about a lawsuit, while WILSON becomes intrigued when JACKIE challenges their long-held beliefs about modern medicine. • White Roots

    A Historical and Autobiographical Work-in-Progress

    White Roots

    by Jacqueline Gladfelter Devereaux

The first part of this trilogy, The Early Years, chronicles the history of my  European ancestors, the Glattfelders of Switzerland, and follows their journey out of the Protestant Reformation to the New World.  This section includes numerous stories about how these founding fathers traveled, arrived, grew, prospered in the new colony of Pennsylvania.  They are shining examples of the type of people that built this new nation.

Church, ship and land records show that the  Glattfelder family arrived in Philadelphia in 1743, but other evidence found in Europe traces the family roots back to the 1300s.  The earliest records show the family emerged from a small village called Glattfelden, located near (modern-day) Zürich, Switzerland. I have attempted to write a true story about the early family, but must admit some parts are derived from my imagination.

The second part of the trilogy, The Middle Years, follows the family through the American colonial period from historical letters and newspaper articles providing detailed information after 1743. These records portray how the family grew and evolved during the tumultuous Revolutionary and Civil Wars, how they spread across the country during the Westward Expansion, and developed a number of important innovations during the Industrial Revolution. Additional records reveal the family's involvment in both World War I and World War II, while more modern records bring the clan's story into the 20th-century.

The third part of the trilogy, the Current Years, is mostly autobiographical with stories from my mother, father, and other family members. The trilogy format was chosen after I started writing my autobiography, however, once I started that text, I realized a more complete history of the entire family was needed. I hope the completed trilogy will carry some literary and historical significance.

Some of The Middle Year stories are about my father's military service and come directly from the drafts of a manuscript written in 1984 by my mother, Helen Tarapchak Glodfelter.

While this manuscript remains a work-in-progress, I write it joyfully, often with tears rolling down my face, recalling my parents and the extraordinary lives they lived. I pray  I got their part of story right and have told as much truth as can be expected of any writer.

To achieve more accuracy in the story-telling, I explored a number of controversial and psychological techniques including past life regression therapy, to help fill in the blanks. While the concepts of past lives and reincarnation are not widely accepted by the scientific community of the 21st century, a statistically high number of unexplained coincidences and psychic phenomenas that I experienced throughout my lifetime have led me to the only logical conclusion possible - “the soul never dies...it simply changes state.” This spiritual concept may not be obvious or even acceptable to many. However, I firmly believe that someday in the future science will evolve and breakthroughs will be made finally proving many of the ancient esoteric truths once and for all. “As above, so below.”

It is not my intent to prove so-called psychic abilities exist or that reincarnation and life after death are viable patterns within nature. I only wish to inform my audience about the research and techniques I used to help write parts of this story. I also have called upon the spirits of a number of people to help me reclaim, remember and rewrite this story. Those spirit Muses include: Sir Francis Bacon; Ernest Hemingway; Jimi Hendrix; my mother, Helen; my father, Jack; my brother Jimmy; and my sister, Jaye, as well as, grandparents and ancient ancestors.

Throughout my life, I have been fascinated by astrology, alchemy, ancient religions and mysticism. I felt compelled to begin a serious, life-long study of these arts at the age of 15, which continues today. Hopefully, my current audience and future ones will gain an interest in psychic phenomena, life after death and reincarnation, and explore these interesting realms. While I admit that some of what I've learned (or remembered) through these techniques has been painful, I've grown to be a much better story-teller for it.

Not everyone needs to dedicate a lifetime to the study of spiritual concepts, but that is the path I chose. Many people live their lives on Earth just fine without ever experiencing a single, painful, soul-searching session. This mysterious and mystical territory is not for everyone. However, I wanted and needed a deep form of self-inquiry during this lifetime. I do not recommend that anyone embark on this obscure and sometimes frightening journey alone. I recommend first an honest study of the hidden arts for at least 10 years with others who share the same interest. Then, after great study, seek out professionals trained in the new techniques of past life regression therapy, which I promise will unlock the secrets of your Universe.

Happy travels...and I'll see you on the other side.

In August 2006, I found a black vinyl folder in my mother's closet.  It contained handwritten stories about my Dad's experiences in the military.  I cried when I found it.

I talked to my mother's spirit, thanking her (through my tears) for leading me to her long-lost pages.  I knew Mom never got a chance to finish her book about our Dad because a much longer manuscript of 150-plus pages was lost to the trash.  I promissed my Mom's spirit that I would finish her work.

I started translating my Mom's handwritten pages, copying down everything verbatim at first.  Now, I'm rewriting, editing and adding a lot of historical research.

This work-in-progress is entitled,"White Roots," and it traces my family tree through America to the current era.  The last part portrays my life growing up as a military brat in a family of six children into adulthood.

Mars Bonfire: An American Sadhu

Written in 1994 as a novel

Adapted to a screenplay in 2002 and submitted to Project Greenlight receivng excellent reviews

"Mars Bonfire" is based on the true life story of Craig George Michael Evers, a police officer turned drug dealer, who after a series of mystical and exotic experiences evolved into an American holy man.

The story Mars Bonfire expresses the three major themes in film and literature: Man against Man; Man against Nature; and Man against Himself.

This story is about achieving great success and fortune only to be followed by disgrace and failure, which ultimately leads to his spiritual redemption.

Mars Bonfire portrays the hippie generation of youth who "tuned in, turned on and dropped out" of mainstream American society by taking psychedelic drugs and expanding their consciousness while protesting the Vietnam War. This true story follows a generation of youth who embraced free love and alternative lifestyles while flocking to rock music festivals exploding across America.

Craig grew up in a Republican family from Niles, Michigan that relocated to Southern California in 1967.  Craig first worked as a San Diego Police Officer before leaving the force to become a free wheeling international hippie drug dealer.

Craig's journey led from California to the Himalayas where he became the first person to commercially manufacture hash oil and distribute it internationally.

In America, he became a millionaire and overseas he earned the titles of Village Chief,  Doctor and Holy Man from the Newari tribe of Chobar, Nepal.

The feds busted him in the mid-1980s with five pounds of pure China White Number 4 heroin. He served five years inside a federal penitentary but never ratted out his partners or sources.  After his release from prison in 1990, he met me, moved in, we married in Thailand and stayed together for eight years.  He took me abroad a number of times, recounting his glory days while introducing eastern religions and mysticism.

Craig became my guru and then my dependent but after a near death experience during a storm at sea in 1998, we parted ways.  He returned to Thailand, married a native woman there, then was forced to return to the United States due to Social Security and failing health.  He died on September 29, 2009 in a San Diego hospital. His remarkable story deserves to be heard.

The script Mars Bonfire is an action packed, erotic thriller with strong male roles, mystical themes and exotic site locations.

It's a story for the Baby Boomers or anyone who lived during the hippie generation.  It's a story about an average American guy who experienced extraordinary things leading him into heroin drug trafficing.  It's a true story about a man who after falling from grace achieved spiritual redemption and enlightenment.  It's a story about one man's karma and a story about America's karma.
